FAQs

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

General Questions

Q: Does WiFiCopy collect my data or track me?
A: No. WiFiCopy does not collect any data, use analytics, access advertising IDs, or track users in any way. All operations are performed locally on your device.

Q: Does WiFiCopy require internet access?
A: No. WiFiCopy works entirely offline and only connects to your local network servers (SMB/FTP/SFTP). No internet connection is required.

Q: Can I use WiFiCopy on mobile data?
A: WiFiCopy is designed for local network transfers. While technically possible, transferring files over mobile data would require your server to be publicly accessible, which is not recommended for security reasons.

Q: What's the difference between SMB, FTP, and SFTP?
A: - SMB: Best for Windows networks and NAS devices. Supports encryption with SMB3. - FTP: Unencrypted file transfers. Use only on trusted networks. - SFTP: Encrypted transfers over SSH. Most secure option for internet-facing servers.

File Transfer Questions

Q: What's the maximum file size I can transfer?
A: There's no hard limit in WiFiCopy. The limit depends on your server's available space and Android's file system capabilities.

Q: Can I transfer multiple files at once?
A: Yes! You can select multiple individual files or entire folders. WiFiCopy will transfer them all in sequence.

Q: What happens if the transfer is interrupted?
A: You can pause and resume transfers. If the app crashes or connection is lost, you'll need to restart the transfer. Partially transferred files may remain on the server.

Q: Can I overwrite existing files on the server?
A: Yes. In the configuration dialog, enable "Overwrite Existing Files" to replace files with the same name. If disabled, existing files will be skipped.

Q: Why is my transfer slow?
A: Transfer speed depends on: - WiFi signal strength (use 5GHz for faster speeds) - Server disk speed - Network congestion - File size and quantity

Q: Can I transfer files in the background?
A: Yes. Transfers continue when you switch apps or lock your screen. For scheduled backups, the app runs in the background automatically.

Scheduled Backup Questions

Q: Do scheduled backups work when the app is closed?
A: Yes! Scheduled backups run in the background even when the app is closed, as long as the conditions are met (WiFi connected, battery not critically low).

Q: Why isn't my scheduled backup running?
A: Check these common issues: - Backup job is enabled (toggle on) - WiFi trigger is satisfied (if enabled) - Battery optimization is disabled for WiFiCopy - Notification permissions are granted - Device isn't in aggressive battery saver mode

Q: Can I run a scheduled backup manually?
A: Yes! Tap "Run Now" on any scheduled backup to execute it immediately, regardless of the schedule.

Q: How many scheduled backups can I create?
A: You can create up to 5 scheduled backup jobs.

Q: Will scheduled backups capture new files I add to a folder?
A: Yes! If you select a folder for backup (not individual files), new files added to that folder will automatically be included in future backups.

Q: Do scheduled backups drain my battery?
A: Scheduled backups are designed to be battery-efficient. They only run when conditions are met and use Android's WorkManager for optimal battery usage.

Configuration Questions

Q: How do I find my server's IP address?
A: - Windows: Open Command Prompt, type ipconfig, look for IPv4 Address - Mac/Linux: Open Terminal, type ifconfig or ip addr - Router: Check your router's admin page for connected devices

Q: Can I save multiple server configurations?
A: Yes! You can save multiple SMB and FTP configurations and switch between them easily.

Q: Are my passwords stored securely?
A: Yes. All passwords are encrypted with AES-256-GCM encryption and stored in Android's hardware-backed Keystore. Passwords are never stored in plaintext.

Q: What happens to my configurations if I uninstall the app?
A: For security, configurations and passwords are NOT backed up. You'll need to re-enter them if you reinstall the app.

Q: Can I export my configurations?
A: Currently, configurations cannot be exported. This is a security measure to protect your credentials.

Connection Issues

Q: Why can't I connect to my Windows share?
A: Common solutions: - Verify the server address and share name are correct - Ensure SMB is enabled on Windows (Settings → Apps → Optional Features → SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing) - Check Windows Firewall allows SMB connections - Verify username and password are correct - Try without domain name if connection fails

Q: Why do I get "Authentication failed" with SMB?
A: - Verify username and password are correct - Check if domain name is required (or try without it) - Ensure the user has permissions to access the share - Try using the full username format: DOMAIN\username

Q: Why does FTP connection fail with "501 server can't accept argument"?
A: WiFiCopy automatically handles this error with fallback methods. If it persists, your FTP server may have very strict command parsing. Try using SFTP instead if available.

Q: Why does my SFTP connection timeout?
A: - Verify SSH service is running on port 22 (or your configured port) - Check firewall allows SSH connections - Ensure username and password are correct - Try increasing connection timeout in advanced settings

Q: Can I use a hostname instead of an IP address?
A: Yes! You can use hostnames like nas.local or server.example.com as long as they're resolvable on your network.

Language & Localization

Q: How do I change the app language?
A: - Android 13+: Settings → Apps → WiFiCopy → Language - Android 12 and below: Change your system language

Q: What languages are supported?
A: WiFiCopy is fully translated into 12 languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, Italian, Indonesian, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (Simplified).

Q: Can I help translate WiFiCopy to my language?
A: We appreciate your interest! Please contact us through the support website to discuss translation contributions.

Security & Privacy

Q: Is my data encrypted during transfer?
A: - SMB3: Supports encryption (auto-negotiated with server) - SFTP: Fully encrypted via SSH - FTP: Not encrypted (use only on trusted networks)

Q: Can WiFiCopy access my files without permission?
A: No. WiFiCopy only accesses files you explicitly select. It requires storage permissions granted by you.

Q: Does WiFiCopy work with VPN?
A: Yes! WiFiCopy works with VPN connections. This is actually recommended for accessing servers over the internet securely.

Q: Is the app open source?
A: WiFiCopy uses several open source libraries (SMBJ, Apache Commons Net, JSch) but the app itself is proprietary. You can view all open source licenses in the app via "View Licenses" button.
